WHO GAVE THE
MONKEYS THE KEYS?!
KOLKATA. Reports are coming in of a small kitchen where the grown-ups left the room. Inside: a bunch of curious monkeys, a lot of ghee and sacks of grain. No preservatives, no fancy powders, no nasties. Just the same things Indian kitchens have trusted for centuries. Witnesses describe weeks of roasting, grinding, tasting, arguing and starting over. Neighbours reported the smell of roasting besan late into the night. Many experiments failed. A few were eaten anyway.
Then, somewhere in the mess, someone rolled up a laddoo. One bite, and the heart started spinning. Locals call it dil mera laddoo. It happens to everyone who eats a good one, and it still happens to us. Maybe that’s why laddoos turn up at every wedding, every new job, every exam result and every festival on the calendar. In India, good news usually arrives in a box of laddoos. So the monkeys did what monkeys do. They went looking for more, one state at a time, and kept the keys. Last seen somewhere between the lanes of Kolkata
